Taking Monster Whitetails – It’s In Your Head
Could this be the year when you finally take that monster whitetail buck that people will talk about for years to come? You know the type of buck I’m speaking of. There are very few monsters out there to be had and this could be your year to put one on the wall.
Do you cringe when a first timer brings in one of these monsters? Luck happens but not very often. You can increase your odds of taking a truly majestic beast if you will spend a little time understanding some fundamentals. Many hunters know what to do but few actually put their heads down and get it done. I’m talking about scouting, reading signs, understanding weather patterns and knowing what’s going on in the mind of the big boy in the woods. Your chances of coming in contact with a monster buck depends on your willingness to fine tune your thinking.

Where are they? That’s the first thing you’ve got to find out. That’s common sense, yet how many times have you gone out and come back without ever seeing one deer? Sure maybe you heard one but truth be told it was probably only a squirrel cutting nuts a few trees over. The reality is that not all areas contain any big bucks at all. In other words, they simply aren’t there period. However, it’s true that in other areas there may be one, two, three or more big bucks. What makes one tract home to several large bucks and another seemingly identical plot having none? There can several notable differences in each parcel such as food sources, past hunting pressure and natural cover. Never go out hoping they are there. You must know they are there!
If you are reading this far then I know you are determined to see it done. You are determined to adapt knew strategies and improve upon the hunting tactics you currently employ. Monster
bucks are old. They have not grown old accidentally. These heavies are the best of the best and they know it. They’ve heard all the calls smelled all the latest scents from Wal-mart and they still walk tall and proud. They are resourceful which means for you to have an audience with them you must be more resourceful.
Big bucks frequently have muddy feet. So what does that tell you? They like to hang close to water. It’s good to go low in golf and it is also good to go low when trying to get in front of big deer. Position yourself in the lowland or near a creek bottom. These areas afford wonderful cover making it one of their favorite haunts. These areas see lots of traffic especially after opening day when the pressure is on. So let your buddy have the lovely view from the top while you setup shop in the depths.
Finally, since we are fine tuning our focus, think of these big old goliaths not as just whitetail deer but as a completely unique animal. Why? They are old, smart, slow and patient. This is not the typical trait of your everyday whitetail that ends up at the processing house. The point being is that everyday tactics simply don’t work on these guys. They will not run at the first sign of danger. To avoid you they will swim and even crawl. You must learn new strategies to earn a face to face with a monster whitetail.
